The City of Hancock is about to become a little bit larger.
Last night, council members approved the annexation of a small parcel in Franklin Township.
City Manager Mary Babcock explained that the property had been deeded to the city a couple of decades ago to be associated with Terrace Park. It should also have been annexed at that time, but it fell through the cracks.
Babcock also shared that the latest road paving project in the Business and Technology Park is nearly complete. A crew will be in the area soon to stripe the new roadway, and several other areas in the city.
The city is taking over the concession stand at the HoCo. Concessions have been handled in recent years by the Copper Country Junior Hockey Association, but they have told the city that they are no longer able to provide sufficient staffing.
Absentee ballots for the November Hancock Schools millage election will be mailed out early next week. The city’s election commission will meet this morning at 9:00. The standard voting system accuracy test will take place next week.
Babcock also noted that the Downtown Development Authority is working on an agreement to purchase the property at 114 East Franklin Street, behind the Hancock Bike Shop and KC Bonkers. It will be used for municipal parking.
Several residents voiced concerns about the Flock Security License Plate Reading system, urging the city not to get involved because of cost, privacy and liability concerns. The company contracts with local governments to install license plate readers at key locations to record vehicles that pass by. Information can be shared with other law enforcement agencies to help track crime suspects, fugitives and kidnap victims. Council members said there is no active proposal under consideration to join the network, although Flock representatives have requested time to make a presentation.
