A proposed $50 million state boost for the Copperwood Mine is once again at risk.
State Representative Greg Markkanen had requested that the subsidy be added to the 2025-2026 state budget.
It now appears that the money will not be included.
The online publication Bridge Magazine reports that Republican House Speaker Matt Hall has confirmed the deletion.
Final budget figures have not yet been worked out, though, and Republican State Senator Ed McBroom told Bridge that they’re still trying to get the money reinstated.
Local officials and economic developers have backed Highland Copper’s $450 million project in Gogebic County, saying it will provide needed jobs and raw materials essential for manufacturing. Opponents express concern about the mine’s effect on the adjacent Porcupine Mountains, and nearby Lake Superior.
