Site preparation has been underway for some time, but ground was officially broken for Upper Peninsula State Bank’s new downtown Houghton office yesterday.
For bank President and CEO David Williams, it’s more of a midway point than a beginning…
It’s been two-and-a-half to three years to get to this point. We are a community-focused bank, and to bring a bank to vibrant downtown Houghton – it’s an honor and a privilege.
Downtown Houghton has been without a bank since Wells Fargo closed its office in the former Houghton National Bank Building about a decade ago. Williams says that should change by next fall…
We’re going to work pretty hard into November, December – do some foundational work. We’re going to have underground parking. And then pick it back up early spring, and we do hope to be in here about a year from right now, with a two-story beautiful bank building with lots of cute little surprises.
The new bank office will be located at the east edge of downtown, on land formerly occupied by the Hodge Building, which was home to the Keweenaw Peninsula Chamber of Commerce. It’s part of a larger project developed by Moyle Construction, which will also include a number of housing units.
