In high school volleyball last night…
- Houghton fell 3-1 (25-19, 23-25, 25-19, 25-19) to Ishpeming.
- Hancock dropped a tight 3-2 (25-12, 26-28, 28-26, 21-25, 15-11) battle against Negaunee.
- Dollar Bay-Tamarack City got past Ontonagon 3-1 (25-13, 19-25, 25-17, 25-15). Kiera Isaacson had 16 kills, 20 digs, and 5 aces for the Blue Bolts. Sophie Berryman and Laila Bell each had 5 kills, and Sylvie Kentala had 29 assists.
- Jeffers slipped past Ironwood 3-1 (25-21, 25-16, 15-25, 25-18). Mia Nordstrom led the team in kills with 15 and Alaina Kangas added 6. Aya Keteri had 15 digs. Mindy Hillstrom had 14 assists.
- L’Anse lost to Wakefield-Marenisco 3-0 (25-23, 25-10, 25-9).
- Baraga shaded Ewen-Trout Creek 3-1 (25-20, 14-25, 25-20, 25-18).
- Chassell defeated Watersmeet 3-0 (25-18, 25-18, 25-19). Elli Kuntze had 10 kills, 5 aces and 5 digs, Sylvia Aho had 20 assists, 1 kill and 1 ace, Dusty Lippold had 11 kills, 6 digs and 5 aces, and Oriana Olson had 8 kills and 3 aces.
- Forest Park shut down West Iron County (25-15, 25-15, 25-15).
At the Negaunee Invitational cross country meet yesterday…
- Jeffers won the boys team title, with Houghton second and Hancock seventh. Cameroin Anderson of the Jets finished first overall, with teammate Landon Larson third. Houghton’s Benjamin Hemmer finished sixth.
- The Houghton girls took an easy victory, with Calumet third and Hancock fourth. Sela Niska, Holly Cooke and Norah Woodruff of the Gremlins placed second, third and fourth. Calumet’s Elli Harju finished eighth, and Hancock’s Jill Bird 14th.

Dollar Bay-Tamarack City, Chassell, L’Anse, Baraga and Ewen-Trout Creek will be among the teams running at the Ewen-Trout Creek Invitational this afternoon.
The Houghton boys soccer team played to a 1-1 tie against Kingsford.

Tarik Skubal powered the Tigers to a 2-1 victory over the Guardians in the opening game of their best-of-three Wild Card playoff series yesterday. Skubal struck out 14 batters before leaving in the eighth inning. He allowed one run on three hits. Will Vest recorded the final four outs. Spencer Torkelson singled home Kerry Carpenter in the first inning for Detroit. Riley Greene scored the game-winner on Zach McInstry’s sacrifice bunt in the seventh.
Game two will be played in Cleveland this afternoon. Casey Mize will start against Tanner Bibee. Coverage will begin at 12:40 on 99.3 The Lift.
The Brewers have an opening-round bye.

- The Red Sox downed the Yankees 3-1.
- The Cubs got past the Padres 3-1.
- The Dodgers outslugged the Reds 10-5.
NHL
The Red Wings claimed a 3-1 preseason victory over the Blackhawks last evening. J.T. Compher, Michael Brandsegg-Nygård and Lucas Raymond scored for Detroit. Cam Talbot stopped 27 shots.
The Wings play another preseason contest at Toronto tomorrow.
NBA
Former Michigan Tech men’s basketball player and assistant coach Ben Stelzer has been named head video coordinator for the Golden State Warriors. Stelzer spent the last two seasons on the coaching staff of the Santa Cruz Warriors G-League team, after working two years as an assistant at Tech.
