In high school volleyball last night…
- Lake Linden-Hubbell swept Chassell 3-0 (26-24, 25-10, 25-16). Cleo Milkey led the Lakes with 12 kills. Payton Goldsworthy had 5 kills and 12 assists. and Ashlyn Steves had 5 aces and 18 digs. For Chassell, Elli Kuntze had 6 kills, 3 blocks, and 8 digs. Dusty Lippold had 6 kills, 8 digs and 1 ace. Jordan Holombo had 12 digs and 1 ace.
- Ewen-Trout Creek blanked Ontonagon 3-0 (25-20, 25-8, 25-15).

Menominee has moved into the top spot in this week’s 11-player football poll from the Upper Peninsula Sportswriters and Sportscasters. After their easy win over Houghton Friday, the Maroons inched past Escanaba into the top spot by one vote. The Eskymoes are second, followed by Kingsford, Calumet and Negaunee. Marquette and Bark River-Harris received Honorable mention votes.
Norway’s convincing win over Pickford moved the Knights into the top spot in the eight-player poll. Gogebic moves up to second, and North Dickinson to third. The Panthers fall to fourth, with Lake Linden-Hubbell and Newberry tied for fifth.
MLB
The Tigers will open the best-of-three Wildcard playoff round at Cleveland this afternoon. Tarik Skubal will start against Gavin Williams. Coverage will begin at 12:40 on 99.3 The Lift.

NHL
The Red Wings fell 2-1 to the Penguins in a preseason game last evening. Former NMU standout Dominik Shine scored Detroit’s only goal late in the game. John Gibson made 18 saves, and took the loss in net.
The Wings play another preseason contest at Chicago tonight.
NFL
The Dolphins held off the Jets 27-21.
The Broncos pasted the Bengals 28-3.

The news about Lions’ starting cornerbacks D.J. Reed and Terrion Arnold is relatively good. Both left Sunday’s win against Cleveland with injuries. Yesterday, coach Dan Campbell confirmed that Reed’s hamstring injury will keep him out “for a while,” but the team doesn’t believe it will end his season. Arnold could miss this week’s game with a shoulder injury, but could return after that.
