A Michigan Technological University student will face a misdemeanor malicious destruction of a memorial charge in 97th district court. Avery Brynn Lawrence has been accused of destroying the Young Americans for Freedom 9/11 memorial at Michigan technological university around September 11th, 2025. Lawrence will retain the Tri County Defenders for legal representation in the case. Houghton County Prosecutor Dan Helmer stated during the arraignment he does not intend to offer a plea deal in the case and requested judge Nicholas Daavetilla issue typical requirements of bond.
The 97th district court will schedule a probable cause hearing in 30 days. The misdemeanor destruction of memorials charge carries a sentence up to one year in jail and or a fine up to three times the value of the destroyed memorial.
A university spokesperson stated, we have conduct processes in place, and these processes can take time.
On September 11th the Young Americans for Freedom group places an annual memorial made up of American flags on campus to remember the victims of the September 11th terror attacks. On September 11th, 2025, the student group found close to 900 flags were removed from the memorial site and placed in a nearby trash can.
