MLB
The Tigers’ once-formidable lead in the American League Central Division is gone, following a 5-2 loss to the Guardians last night. Detroit grabbed an early advantage with help from a Riley Greene home run. Tarik Skubal cruised through five innings, but the wheels came off in the sixth, when Cleveland scored three runs on a single, a wild pitch and a groundout. Skubal committed a balk and an error in the inning. Tigers batters struck out 19 times.
The loss drops Detroit into a tie with Cleveland for first place in the division. Cleveland clinched the season series between the two teams, and holds the tiebreaker if the clubs finish with identical records.
The Tigers play in Cleveland again tonight. Jack Flaherty will start against Tanner Bibee. Coverage will begin at 6:15 on 99.3 The Lift.
Javier Báez was a late scratch from last night’s lineup because of neck stiffness. He’s considered day-to-day.
The Brewers suffered a 7-0 loss to the Padres. Bruce Zimmermann gave up a grand slam in the first inning, and took the loss.
The Brewers visit the Padres again this afternoon. Chad Patrick will pitch against Dylan Cease.
Major League Baseball will begin integrating robotic umpires into its games next summer. The automated system will scan an area vertically above the plate, and horizontally based on the height of the batter. Any pitch that touches that area will be considered a strike. The system will be used only as a backup. Human umpires will still call balls and strikes. Each team will open the game with two challenges. A batter, catcher or pitcher who disagrees with a call will tap the top of his head, and the call will be reviewed. If the review is successful, the team keeps the challenge. If not, they lose it. If a team runs out of challenges, it will be awarded a new one at the beginning of the following inning. MLB officials noted that the system is based on a lengthy review of the technology at the minor league level, and a survey of fans, which indicated a preference for keeping human umpires in control.
NHL
The Red Wings opened their exhibition season with a 3-2 win over the Blackhawks last night. Carter Mazur, Nate Danielson and Emmitt Finnie scored for Detroit. Sebastian Cossa stopped 15 shots.
