Escanaba remains in the top spot in this week’s Upper Peninsula Sportswriters and Sportscasters 11-player football poll. After defeating Calumet last Friday, Menominee finished a close second. Kingsford placed third, with Calumet just behind in fourth place. Calumet will play at Kingsford Friday, with coverage at 6:40 on the Voice of the Copper Kings, KBear 102.3. Bark River-Harris rounded out the top five, with Negaunee earning honorable mention votes.
Pickford continues to dominate the eight-player poll, followed by Norway, Gogebic, North Dickinson and Newberry. Lake Linden-Hubbell and Saint Ignace received honorable mention votes.
MLB
The Tigers had yesterday off, and visit the Guardians tonight. Tarik Skubal will start against Gavin Williams. Coverage will begin at 6:15 on 99.3 The Lift. Detroit leads Cleveland by one game in the race for the American League Central Division title, with six games remaining in the regular season.
Freddy Fermin singled home Bryce Johnson with the winning run in the bottom of the 11th inning, as the Padres edged the Brewers 5-4 last evening. Milwaukee took an early lead, but San Diego tied the game in the seventh against Nick Mears. Each team scored one run in the 10th. Grant Anderson took the loss for the Crew. The victory clinched a post-season berth for the Padres.
The Brewers visit the Padres again tonight. Milwaukee has not designated a starter – they may use recently-called-up Bruce Zimmermann. Randy Vasquez will pitch for San Diego.
Reliever Joel Payamps is no longer a Brewer. He was claimed off waivers by the Braves, after having been designated for assignment.
NHL
The Red Wings open their exhibition season with a home game against the Blackhawks tonight.
NFL
The Lions scored 17 points in the fourth quarter, to put away the Ravens 38-30 last night. The game was tied 21-21 after three quarters. Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery each ran for two touchdowns, with Montgomery compiling 151 yards on 12 carries. The Detroit defense sacked Baltimore quarterback Lamar Jackson seven times.

Special Olympics
The resurgent local Special Olympics organization has added cornhole as a competitive sport. Coaches are needed, and a training session has been scheduled for October 7th. If you’d like to help, you can sign up here.
