College Soccer
The Michigan Tech women’s soccer team scored three goals in the first half, and held on to defeat Roosevelt 3-1 yesterday afternoon. Peyton Wetzel netted her third goal of the season, and Allison Millina and MacKenzie Dollison each earned their first.
The Northern women’s team fell 2-1 to Parkside.
MLB
The Tigers’ once-formidable lead over the Guardians in the American League Central Division now holds at just one game, despite a 6-2 loss to the Braves yesterday. Detroit rapped out 11 hits, but couldn’t score until the bottom of the ninth. Casey Mize pitched into the sixth, gave up three runs, and took the loss.
The Tigers have lost nine of their last 10. They’ll take today off, and visit the Guardians tomorrow. Tarik Skubal will start against Gavin Williams. Coverage will begin at 6:15 on 99.3 The Lift.
Cleveland lost to Minnesota yesterday.
Detroit has released veteran starter Charlie Morton. Moton was a trade deadline acquisition, but gave up 22 earned runs in his last 17 innings over five starts. Former Nationals reliever Tanner Rainey has been called up from Toledo.
The Brewers dropped a 5-1 decision to the Cardinals. Robert Gasser and Erick Fedde combined to allow all five Saint Louis runs.
Despite the loss, Milwaukee clinched the National League Central Division title for the fourth time in the past five years, after the Cubs fell to the Reds.
The Brewers visit the Padres tonight. Freddy Peralta will pitch against Nick Pivetta.
Milwaukee’s playoff hopes suffered a potential blow yesterday, when pitcher Brandon Woodruff was added to the injured list with a right lat strain. He’ll be eligible to return for the playoffs, pending medical evaluation. Gasser was called up to replace him.
NFL
The Packers couldn’t overcome 14 penalties, and suffered an ugly 13-10 loss to the Browns yesterday. Green Bay led 10-3 late in the game, but, with 3:18 remaining, Cleveland’s Grant Delpit picked off a Jordan Love pass and returned it 25 yards to the Packers’ 4-yard line. They scored quickly to tie the game, blocked a Packers’ field goal attempt, and set up rookie Andre Szmyt’s 55-yard game-winner as time expired.
The Chiefs smothered the Giants 22-9 last night.
The Lions travel to Baltimore for the Monday night game, with the broadcast on 99.3 The Lift.
