High School
In football last evening…
- Houghton came from behind to edge Westwood 46-44. The Gremlins improve to 2-2, and will host unbeaten Menominee next Friday. Coverage will begin at 6:40 on the Voice of the Gremlins, 97.7 The Wolf.
- In a battle between two of the top-ranked teams in the U.P., Calumet dropped a hard-fought 25-15 decision to Menominee. The Maroons struck early, with a 79-yard touchdown run on the second play from scrimmage. The Copper Kings responded with a 66-yard scoring drive, capped by a 14-yard Trent Anderson TD run. The Maroons added a one-yard scoring plunge by quarterback Tanner Theuerkauf and an 11-yard run by running back Clayton Miller to take an 18-6 halftime lead. After a scoreless third quarter, Calumet struck with a three-play, 78-yard drive that featured a 52-yard Ben Anderson run, and a 22-yard touchdown pass from Tyler Halonen to Oskar Loukus. A two-point conversion narrowed the gap to three points, but the Maroons put the game away on the first play after the kickoff, as Dawson Bardowski raced 91 yards for a score. The Copper Kings fall to 3-1, and play at Kingsford next Friday. Coverage will begin at 6:40 on the Voice of the Copper Kings, KBear 102.3.
- Hancock fell to Gladstone 57-8 last night.
- L’Anse trounced Manistique 46-16. The Purple Hornets are the last unbeaten team in the Copper Country, and entertain Iron Mountain next Friday.
- The West Iron County game at Iron Mountain was called off at the last minute, when Iron Mountain school officials received a threat against one of their staff members. Read more about that story here. The game will not be made up. The Wykons are also off next week, as their scheduled game against Gwinn was called off when Gwinn canceled its program.
- Lake Linden-Hubbell routed Stephenson 52-20. Brady Axford ran for 165 yards and three touchdowns, and completed 7 of 11 passes for 99 yards and a score. Josh Daavettila added 92 rushing yards, two touchdowns, and three two-point conversions. The Lakes improve to 3-1, and host Forest Park next Saturday, with coverage on 97.9 WFER.
- Forest Park fell 58-32 at Rapid River, and drops to 1-3.
- Ontonagon lost to North Dickinson 62-42.
On the volleyball schedule today…
- Houghton competes at the Pulaski Tournament.
- Forest Park and West Iron County will be among the teams at the Forest Park Invitational.
The Houghton boys soccer team competes at Escanaba Bayside today.

College Football
The 24th-ranked Michigan Tech football team entertains Upper Iowa for the annual Homecoming game today at 4:00.
NMU welcomes Davenport this afternoon at 1:00.
College Volleyball
The Michigan Tech volleyball team dropped a tight 3-1 (23-25, 24-26, 25-21, 24-26) decision at Ferris State last evening. Jacqueline Yancy led the Huskies with 20 kills. Tech will play at Davenport today.
The NMU volleyball squad suffered a 3-0 (25-22, 25-13, 25-23) loss at Davenport last evening, and play at Ferris State today.
College Soccer
The Michigan Tech women’s soccer team played Parkside to a 1-1 draw yesterday afternoon. Peyton Wetzel scored her second goal of the season. The Huskies play at Roosevelt tomorrow afternoon.
The Northern women’s team doubled up Roosevelt 4-2 yesterday, and will play at Parkside tomorrow.
The Northern men’s team fell 3-1 to Parkside yesterday.
College Cross Country
The Michigan Tech men’s cross country team won the Jo Rider Maroon race for Division II and III teams at the prestigious Roy Griak Invitational yesterday. Drew Kolodge took first overall, as the Huskies totaled 35 points – tied for the best performance ever in the 31 years of the race.
MLB
The Tigers’ late-season collapse continued with an ugly 10-1 loss to the Braves last night. Charlie Morton was chased in the second inning, and was charged with six Atlanta runs. Detroit collected just five hits, including a Spencer Torkelson home run.
The Tigers have lost seven of their last eight, and will host the Braves again this afternoon. Keider Montero will start against former Tiger Joey Wentz. Coverage will begin at 12:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
Detroit will finish the regular season without infielder Colt Keith. He’s been added to the injured list with rib cage inflammation that flared up in Thursday’s game.
The Guardians beat the Twins 6-2, and narrowed Detroit’s lead in the American League Central Division to two-and-a-half games.
The Brewers fell to the Cardinals 7-1 last evening. Jacob Misiorowski didn’t make it through the fourth inning, and took the loss. Sal Frelick homered.
The Brewers visit the Cardinals again tonight. Chad Patrick will pitch against Miles Mikolas.
NFL
The Packers visit the Browns for a 1:00 game tomorrow.
The Lions travel to Baltimore for the Monday night game.
