With no large cities in the upper peninsula, the alternative, hardcore, and punk music scene in the region thrives on community. This weekend the DIY scene will come together at the Orpheum Theater in Hancock for the fifth Yoop Fest. Organizers anna greenwood and Chris Joutras say the festival enjoys seeing many familiar and new faces each year. On stage and in the crowd. Some attendees to Yoop Fest even keep in touch as the curtains close.
We have some good friends who got married last year at yoopfest. Chris officiated. – Anna Greenwood, Organizer, Yoopfest
In the middle of the festival. – Chris Joutras, Organizer, Yoopfest
Because they met at the first yoop fest. – Anna Greenwood
So it’s really special for a lot of the bands. – Chris Joutras
and there’s always been years when they get to see the northern lights. And a lot of them hadn’t seen that before. – Anna Greenwood
They live in the cities. There’s too much light pollution for anything like that. – Chris Joutras
And then a ton of bands end up camping together every year and then jumping in Lake Superior. Like we’ve really turned a lot of people on to the U.P. – Anna Greenwood
and on the other side of that there’s bands that have never been here before. And they’re kind of like, ‘who’s this crazy guy emailing me, and is like come up here and play. – Chris Joutras
Artists will take the stage at the Orpheum theater tomorrow at 4 pm. Sets expect to last about 45 minutes each. Friday’s groups include 11 bands, with another 15 shows playing on Saturday.
