Houghton County approves resolutions supporting two developments impacting the area’s housing stock. Last night the Houghton County board of Commissioners approved a brownfield resolution for the Lakeside Townhouse project. The development is estimated to cost 2.2 million dollars to complete.
It’s a six-unit townhouse development, uh three-bedroom units, pretty straightforward. It’s a $2.2 million project overall and a 16-year capture. This project has been approved by the Brownfield Authority. It has had the concurrence of the Houghton-Hancock Local Development Finance Authority. concurrence of the Hancock City DBA, Non-Job Development Authority and the City of Hancock. – Jeff Ratcliffe, Executive Director, Keweenaw Economic Development Alliance
A second project earning support from the Houghton County commission includes the Gateway project. Moyle construction plans to build a new bank branch for UP State Bank and create condominium and apartment units.

Houghton County additionally approved the budget appropriations for 2025 and 2026. The county will work with a budget close to 23 million dollars with a net revenue of 68,759 dollars.

The board of commissioners also approved a new contract with the Tri County Defenders for service representing defendants without the means to pay for their own representation. The board will ask county prosecutor Dan Helmer to review the contract before officially signing on. Additionally, the county approved two payments to Tri County defenders for services provided from May through July 2025.
