The city of Houghton police department hosted a local kick off for special Olympics returning to the western Upper Peninsula on Saturday. And today the law enforcement community kicks off the Special Olympics start of a new season with the Torch Run. The annual Torch Run will take off from Fort Wilkins state park in Copper Harbor at noon. Keweenaw County Sheriff Curt Pennala says the event has raised close to 10,000 dollars to support Special Olympics teams across the state each year.
So they’ve have been looking for quite a few years to have somebody coordinate the different events throughout the area. As far as, um, for Special Olympics, there’s been, um, you know, other communities have bowling and basketball games and, fun stuff to do with these kids like that. So, uh, now that they have a coordinator, we’ll see more of that in our area. – Curt Pennala, Sheriff, Keweenaw County Sheriff’s Office
This year’s torch run starting in copper harbor help support Special Olympic athletes. This year’s celebration today is a little extra special, as the community also celebrates the return of region 39 in the western Upper Peninsula. Sheriff Pennala adds Special Olympics offers engaging opportunities to many youths, and he’s proud to support the organization in 2025. Those interested in joining Keweenaw County Sheriff at the start of the torch run will meet at Fort Wilkins state park before noon.
