High School
In high school football Saturday…
- Lake Linden-Hubbell built a big early lead, and buried Munising 48-36. The Lakes led 34-0 in the second half, before turning much of the responsibility over to their reserves. Brady Axford threw completed two touchdown passes to Lucas Axford, and ran for 126 yards and three scores. Josh Daavettila added 96 rushing yards. Tyler Axford recovered a fumble for a touchdown.
The Jeffers volleyball team at a tournament at Ashland – no report.
The Houghton boys soccer team clobbered Sault Ste. Marie 7-0.

College Football
Northern Michigan’s football team fell 23-18 at Northwood Saturday. The Wildcats outgained the Timberwolves 396-255, but scored just two touchdowns, including one with just seven seconds remaining in the game. NMU threw two interceptions, lost a fumble, and allowed a 97-yard kickoff return for a touchdown.
College Soccer
The Northern Michigan men’s soccer team edged Lawrence Tech 2-1 Saturday. Davian Gumbs’ header in the 70th minute was the game-winner.
The NMU women’s team entertains Minnesota-Duluth today.
The MTU women’s soccer team hosts Saint Cloud State at noon.
College Volleyball
The MTU volleyball team finished the McKendree Classic with a 3-0 sweep of the host Bearcats on Saturday. Jacqueline Yancy led a balanced Huskies attack with 10 kills and eight digs. Tess Hayes had 27 assists.
The NMU volleyball team closed its trip to the SpringHill Suites Invitational in Pensacola with a 3-0 loss to West Florida on Saturday.
MLB
Tarik Skubal turned in another gem Saturday, as the Tigers blanked the White Sox 6-0. Skubal allowed just two hits over seven innings, while striking out six, and earned his 13th win of the season. Jahmai Jones and Gleyber Torres homered. It was the 12th time this season that Skubal has gone six or more scoreless innings. That ties him with former Cardinal Adam Wainwright for the record since MLB lowered the pitching mound in 1969.
The Tigers welcome the White Sox again today. Charlie Morton will start against Davis Martin. Coverage will begin at 1:15 on 99.3 The Lift.
Detroit pitcher Chris Paddack has returned from bereavement leave. Outfielder Justyn-Henry Malloy was sent down to Toledo to make room.
Alex Cobb will not pitch for the Tigers this season, and may be facing the end of his career. Cobb was signed as a free agent to be part of the starting rotation, but developed a chronic hip problem. He tried to rehab and pitch over it, but is now scheduled for resurfacing surgery.
The Brewers shut down the Pirates 4-1 Saturday. Jake Bauers and Jackson Chourio each hit two-run homers. Brandon Woodruff struck out eight over six scoreless innings, and allowed just two hits.
The Brewers play at Pittsburgh again today. Jacob Misiorowski will pitch against Bubba Chandler.
Christian Yelich missed another game with back soreness Saturday, but did take some swings in the batting cage. Manager Pat Murphy said the session went well, and indicated that, while Yelich will not start today, he could be available to pinch-hit.
NFL
The Lions open their season at Green Bay in a 4:25 game today. We’ll join the game after Tigers baseball on the Voice of the Lions, 99.3 The Lift.
Micah Parsons is expected to play in today’s game for the Packers, despite the back injury that’s been bothering him.
Detroit and wide receiver Jameson Williams have reportedly agreed to a three-year contract extension that could be worth as much as $83 million.
In tonight’s NFL game, the Ravens visit the Bills. Coverage will begin at 8:00 on 99.3 The Lift.
