High School
In high school football last night…
- Houghton fell to Kingsford 29-6.
- Calumet buried Westwood 55-6. The Patriots scored a touchdown on their opening possession. The Copper Kings responded with a drive that ended at the Westwood one-yard line. The Patriots took over on downs, but were forced to punt into the wind. Oskar Loukus returned the short kick 29 yards for a touchdown. The Kings then forced two Patriots’ fumbles and intercepted a pass, turning each opportunity into a quick scoring drive to build a 28-6 halftime lead. The Patriots recorded only three first downs in the game – all on their opening drive.
- The Menominee game at Hancock was canceled.
- L’Anse got past West Iron County 20-14.
- Ontonagon lost to Newberry 34-14.
- Forest Park slipped past Ishpeming 28-22.

College Football
Northern Michigan’s football team plays at Northland this afternoon.
College Soccer
Michigan Tech’s women’s soccer team opened its season with a 1-0 loss to Minnesota-Duluth last evening.
The Northern Michigan men’s soccer team hosts Lawrence Tech today.
The NMU women’s team played to a 1-1 draw against Saint Cloud State yesterday, and will host Cedarville University today.
College Volleyball
The MTU volleyball team split their matches at the McKendree Classic yesterday, with a tight 3-0 (21-25, 20-25, 21-25) loss to Missouri-Saint Louis, and a 3-1 (17-25, 25-20, 25-20, 25-16) triumph over Southwestern Oklahoma State. The Huskies will take on McKendree this afternoon.
At the SpringHill Suites Invitational in Pensacola, the NMU volleyball team fell 3-1 (19-25, 25-22, 17-25, 19-25) to Spring Hill College yesterday morning, then dropped a 3-0 (19-25, 23-25, 15-25) decision to 15th-ranked Southwest Minnesota State last evening. They’ll wrap up with a game against West Florida this morning.
MLB
The Tigers’ struggles continued last night, with a 7-5 loss to the lowly White Sox. Jack Flaherty gave up four runs before leaving in the fifth inning with the score tied. Bailey Horn gave up a solo homer in the sixth, and took the loss. Parker Meadows returned from the injured list for Detroit, and hit a home run.
The Tigers welcome the White Sox again tonight. Tarik Skubal will start against Martín Pérez. Coverage will begin at 5:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
Detroit has added reliever Kyle Finnegan to the injured list with a right adductor strain. Team officials describe the injury as “mild,” and hope he’ll return before the end of the month.
The Brewers used a late surge to sink the Pirates 5-2. Quinn Priester allowed two runs over seven innings, and earned his 12th win of the season. He has not lost a game since May 13th. Jake Bauers had two hits and drove in two runs.
The Brewers visit the Pirates tonight. Brandon Woodruff will pitch against Mitch Keller.
Christian Yelich missed his third straight game with back soreness, but team officials said he had experienced some improvement. He continues to be listed as day-to-day. Reliever Nick Mears has landed on the injured list with tightness in his lower back. He joins fellow pitchers Trevor Megill, Shelby Miller, Grant Anderson, DL Hall and Logan Henderson on the sidelines. Carlos Rodriguez has been called up from Nashville.
NFL
The Chargers upended the Chiefs 27-21 in Friday’s NFL game played in São Paulo, Brazil, last night.
The Lions open their season at Green Bay in a 4:25 game tomorrow. We’ll join the game after Tigers baseball on the Voice of the Lions, 99.3 The Lift.
Newly-acquired Green Bay defensive end Micah Parsons remains listed as questionable for the game with a back problem. Yesterday, he said he hopes to play.
