High School
In high school football last night…
- Houghton lost at Iron Mountain 41-22.
- Calumet blanked West Iron County 41-0. Quarterback Tyler Halonen broke loose for touchdown runs of 30 and 7 yards in the first half. Trent Anderson scored twice on short runs in the third quarter, and Jax Carlson and Sawyer Berg added insurance TDs in the fourth quarter. Ben Anderson rushed for 140 yards on nine attempts, kicked five extra points, and led the defense in tackles with five. Halonen added 96 yards on nine attempts, and completed one of two passes for 16 yards. Erik Loukus intercepted a pass, and Peter Torola blocked a punt that set up the Kings’ first scoring drive. The Kings outgained the Wykons 397-81. They were penalized four times for 77 yards.
- L’Anse stopped Hancock 26-6.
- Lake Linden-Hubbell fell 38-34 to North Dickinson. Brady Axford completed five of nine passes for two touchdowns, and rushed for 128 yards. Blake Lebo threw three touchdown passes.
- Forest Park fell to Newberry 22-20.
The Ontonagon football team begins its season tonight at Ishpeming.
In high school volleyball yesterday…
- Hancock v Jeffers – no report.
- Forest Park blanked Carney-Nadeau 3-0 (25-12, 25-17, 25-6).

- Houghton competes at the Beast of Northeast Tourney.
The Houghton boys’ soccer team fell 4-1 to Marquette yesterday.
In cross country, Marquette swept its own Dale Phillips Invitational yesterday.
- The Houghton girls finished second, just one point off the pace. Tessa Rautiola and Holly Cooke placed fourth and fifth individually. Hancock finished eighth.
- The Houghton boys took third place, Ben Hemmer led the Gremlins with an eighth-place finish.

College Football
The Michigan Tech football team stunned 16th-ranked Bemidji State 37-17 last night. The Huskies outscored the Beavers 21-0 in the second half to put the game away. Alex Bueno completed 15 of 24 pass attempts for 188 yards and two touchdowns, and also ran for 102 yards and one score. Nic Nora rushed for one touchdown, and caught a TD pass.
Northern Michigan University dropped a wild 44-37 game to Minnesota State-Moorhead. The Wildcats’ running game was in full gear. Austin Ridl, Noah Dobert and Jahi Wood combined for 297 yards on 49 carries. Each scored a touchdown.
College Cross Country
The Michigan Tech cross country team has been picked to finish third in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference this fall. The preseason coaches’ poll placed Grand Valley State at the top, with Saginaw Valley State second.
MLB
The Tigers had yesterday off, and open a series at Kansas City tonight. Chris Paddack will start against Seth Lugo. Coverage will begin at 7:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
Former Tigers pitcher Daryl Patterson has died. Patterson appeared in 38 games in Detroit’s 1968 championship season as a rookie, finishing 22, and posting a 2.12 earned run average. He spent three more seasons with Detroit, before finishing his career with the Athletics, Cardinals and Pirates. Daryl Patterson was 81.
The Brewers fell 6-4 to the Diamondbacks, in a game in which all of the scoring came in the first three innings. Jose Quintana left in the fourth inning, after giving up six hits and four walks. Sal Frelick homered.
The Brewers visit the Blue Jays tonight. Freddy Peralta will pitch against Shane Bieber.
NFL
The Packers have brought in four-time Pro Bowl defensive end Micah Parsons in a sign-and-trade deal with the Cowboys. Parsons had been unhappy with Dallas over discussions about a contract extension. He’ll make $188 million over the next four years in Green Bay – the richest non-quarterback contract in NFL history. The Packers give up two first-round draft picks and defensive tackle Kenny Clark.
