Special Olympics plans to make a comeback in the Copper Country.
Area 39 of the Special Olympics of Michigan, serving Baraga Gogebic, Houghton Keweenaw and Ontonagon counties, will kick off a grand return to the region following a prolonged absence with the addition of a bowling team.
Students age 8 and up can join the team and choose between two locations for weekly practice, at the Mine Shaft in Houghton or at Big Shots in Ironwood. The first practice for the area 29 team will meet on September 6th. Practices will take place on Saturdays weekly.
Winter sports will start in November. The special Olympics will plan on bringing back teams for snowshoeing, cross country skiing, and basketball to the western Upper Peninsula.
