The Hancock Planning Commission could approve another step toward opening more rental housing units in the city at its meeting tonight.
Moyle Construction subsidiary Hancock Office Building, LLC is asking that their Skyline Commons building and surrounding property be rezoned to residential. They’re also looking for permission to renovate the building’s entrances.
The revamped building is expected to include 27 housing units.
The Skyline Commons was built in 1951 as St. Joseph’s Hospital, which became Portage View Hospital, and the Portage Health System.
When Portage Health moved into its new facility in Hancock in 2000, Finlandia University took over the building. Finlandia operated it as the Jutila Center until the university closed, and it was sold at auction.
The planning commission will also consider a request by McGann Building Supply for some outdoor improvements, and an application for an outdoor patio from the Keweenaw Co-op.
Tonight’s meeting begins at 6:00 at Hancock City Hall.
