Michigan Technological University cultivates community. Incoming students have plenty of organizations to choose from. And dorm halls create a feeling of home among floor mates and room mates.
The very first experience someone driving on US 41 is our students are number one. And that is the most important thing for us. Then followed by that is just to see this beautiful facility that looks to be state of the art, that looks to be a fantastic experience for our students. We’re putting students at the heart of Michigan Tech in our community, letting that be the first impression. – Matt Weekely, Director, Residential Living, Michigan Technological University
In 2023 the university put out a call for spare rooms in the community due to an overwhelming number of students living on campus already. And no new room for students to make their own. That call on the community was quickly followed by Michigan Tech announcing construction plans for the East Hall.
Over the last few years, we’ve had students just love living on campus and given our enrollment popularity and growth we did see a little bit of that pinch. But what we did is in that situation, we reached out to students and asked for their assistance and worked with our returning students to explore living off campus within the community. So that way our brand-new Husky students could come to campus and have the support they need to transition successfully. – Matt Weekely, Director, Residential Living, Michigan Technological University
Michigan Technological University has a growing campus. In 2023 the campus saw the student body grow 3.5 percent from the year before. And the university boosts a very high retention rate, keeping students on the path to educational success.
We have our traditional residence halls like our Wadsworth, DHH, McNair, which really are focused on our first-year population. That’s because the heart of those buildings is to help students get out of their rooms, engage with one another, build those relationships, have those experiences with students and develop that sense of home that I talked about. East Hall is a progression of that, geared a little bit more towards a returning student population who has already been able to do that. – Matt Weekely, Director, Residential Living, Michigan Technological University
East Hall features several amenities helping students begin living with more independence. Double and Single Suites feature private bathrooms students’ upkeep over the fall and spring semester. The new dorm also features air conditioning, several types of study and community lounges, program-oriented spaces, A fitness center and 24/7 convenience store, a gaming room and music room as well.
Incoming students will continue fall orientation week today and tomorrow. OnSaturday residents will see students make their way downtown and walk fast to vendor tables, non-profits in the area, and student organizations during afternoon on the town. Some sophomores, juniors, and seniors may even sneak through to pick up coupons and other freebies during the event. Classes will start up for the fall semester on Friday.
