Technology has become a bigger part of education, and life. But it’s still important to balance screen time with regular play and adventures.
You know that screens are ubiquitous now. They are everywhere; we can’t get away from them. So, the challenge really is balancing non-digital activities with the positive benefits of technology. – Kevin Weir, Parent Cafe Facilitator, Treehouse Family Resource Center
Tonight, the treehouse family resource center hosts its latest parent cafe. The group will gather parents together to talk about screen time, technology, and making sure children grow up with well-rounded skills and knowledge. Parent cafe facilitator Kevin Weir says it can be difficult with how technology has been integrated into everyday life.
We offer some prompt questions for parents to get together in a safe and lighthearted environment where they can talk about different issues related to technology screens and AI. Like for example, we’ll have a prompt question is like, what role does technology play in your family’s daily routine? And then parents would get together and the concept is that they get to connect with each other, but also that they learn from each other. – Kevin Weir, Parent Cafe Facilitator, Treehouse Family Resource Center
Weir adds technology can have plenty of benefits away from education tools. Such as connecting with family members or friends who live out of town.
Technology can have a dark side too. And Weir says parent cafes will prompt conversations around parental controls and how to discuss with children about how to stay safe online.
There’s a lot of nefarious activities available to kids nowadays. A lot more than when I was a kid. And balancing and safeguarding their best interests will probably be a big part of the conversation. – Kevin Weir, Parent Cafe Facilitator, Treehouse Family Resource Center
