MLB
The Tigers held off the Twins for an 8-5 victory Saturday. Casey Mize pitched into the seventh, struck out 10, gave up four runs, and earned his 12th win of the season. Detroit broke a 3-3 tie with three runs in the top of the seventh. Minnesota came back to score two in the bottom of the inning, but the Bengals scored two in the top of the ninth to seal the win. The Tigers rapped out 12 hits, and took advantage of nine walks.
The Tigers have won seven of their last nine, and visit the Twins again today. Chris Paddack will pitch against Travis Adams. Coverage will begin at 1:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
The Brewers’ team-record winning streak reached 14 games in dramatic fashion, Saturday, with a 6-5 11-inning victory over the Reds. The Crew trailed 2-1 in the top of the ninth, but scratched out a run when Brice Turang scored on an infield ground-out. Each team scored once in the 10th. Andruw Monasterio’s three-run homer in the top of the 11th put the Brewers on top. Cincinnati scored twice in the bottom of the inning, but Matt McLain’s flyout to center field ended the game.
The Brewers play at Cincinnati again this afternoon. Jose Quintana will start against Andrew Abbott.
Milwaukee has placed pitcher D.L. Hall back on the injured list. He suffered an oblique strain during Friday’s game, and will be out indefinitely. Grant Anderson has been summoned from Nashville to fill in.
NFL
The Lions suffered a 24-17 preseason loss to the Dolphins Saturday. Miami scored 10 points in the fourth quarter to put the game away. In the back-up quarterback battle, Kyle Allen completed 14 of 17 passes for 124 yards and two touchdowns. Hendon Hooker completed six of 13 passes for 61 yards, with one interception.
The Lions close their preseason next Saturday at home against the Texans.
The Packers used a strong fourth quarter to surge past the Colts 23-19 Saturday. Green Bay took command with 13 points in the fourth quarter. Taylor Elgersma completed seven of 11 passes for 109 yards. Malik Willis connected on six of 14 for 83 yards. Neither threw a touchdown nor an interception.
The Packers conclude their preseason campaign at home against the Seahawks next Saturday.
Great Deer Chase
At the Great Deer Chase Saturday at the Swedetown Trails:
- Sam Kilpela from Atlantic Mine won the 30-mile event, besting Zachary Butto from Marquette by 44 seconds. Tina Eakon from Folsom, California, was the top women’s finisher, and 10th overall.
- Competing in the 14-and-Under Division, Leah Robinson of Ishpeming took the 15-mile race, two-and-a-half minutes ahead of Jeremy Hinkson from Marquette, who was the top male finisher.
- Quinn Justen from Prescott, Wisconsin, won the eight-mile event, finishing nearly eight minutes ahead of Calumet’s Aunders Anderson. Rebecca Brunner from Holland, Michigan, was the top women’s finisher, and sixth overall.
