L’Anse may open the door to a marijuana retailer.
At last night’s village council meeting, Outpost Stores general manager Gary Tollefson explained that they would like to add an outlet in Baraga County.
The Outpost currently has retail locations in Marquette and Crystal Falls, where they sell both medical and recreational products. They are also building a production facility in Crystal Falls. The Keweenaw Bay Indian Community holds a majority ownership interest in the organization.
Tollefson explained the rigorous safety and aesthetic procedures required by the state for such an operation. He speculated that the village’s share of the state marijuana tax revenue distribution could bring in around $50,000 per year.
Village Manager Bob LaFave said the idea is in early stages. The village planning commission will begin the task of determining where a marijuana retailer might be appropriately placed. Tollefson indicated an ideal location might be on US-41 within the village limits.
There are currently no licensed marijuana distributors in Baraga County.
