MLB
The Tigers built a big early lead, and held off the Angels 9-5 yesterday. Kerry Carpenter’s three-run homer in the fourth inning put Detroit up 7-0. Casey Mize gave up two runs in the fifth, but earned the win. L.A. scored one off Tommy Kahnle, and two off Rafael Montero, but Will Vest closed the door in the ninth. Riley Greene added a late home run.
The Tigers visit the White Sox tonight. Chris Paddack will pitch against former Tiger Tyler Alexander. Coverage will begin at 7:15 on 99.3 The Lift.
Matt Vierling is back on the injured list. Vierling hit the game-winning home run in Friday’s game after missing most of the season. He began to experience discomfort in Saturday’s game, and has been diagnosed with a left oblique strain. It’s not known if he’ll be ready to return before the end of the season.
Trey Sweeney has been called up to fill in.
Isaac Collins’ lead-off home run in the bottom of the ninth gave the Brewers a 7-6 comeback win over the Mets yesterday. The game was played despite a heavy overnight rain that caused street flooding around the stadium in Milwaukee. Quinn Priester struggled, giving up all six New York runs before leaving in the fifth. Two William Contreras home runs helped keep the Brewers in striking distance. Joey Ortiz singled home the tying run in the bottom of the eighth, setting up Collins’ first career walk-off homer.
The Brewers welcome the Pirates tonight. Freddy Peralta will pitch against Andrew Heaney.
