MLB
Matt Vierling’s first home run of the season lifted the Tigers to a 6-5 victory over the Angels last evening. Vierling’s pinch-hit shot in the bottom of the eighth inning salvaged a sub-par start by Tarik Skubal, who gave up a run in the second, and left after Los Angeles scored three times on a pair of homers in the fifth. Spencer Torkelson hit his 25th home run of the season for Detroit.
The Tigers host the Angels again tonight. Charlie Morton will pitch against Yusei Kikuchi. Coverage will begin at 5:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
Luke Jackson’s stay in Detroit turned out to be a brief one. The Tigers signed the veteran reliever two weeks ago, after he was cut by the Rangers. Yesterday, after three shaky appearances, they designated him for assignment, and called Codi Heuer up from Toledo.
The Brewers’ win streak reached seven last night, with a 3-2 victory over the Mets. Brandon Woodruff gave up two solo homers early, then pitched through the seventh, allowing just three hits. Milwaukee scored three in the fifth, with help from a Brice Turang home run.
The Brewers entertain the Mets again tonight. Frankie Montas will pitch against Tobias Myers. Myers will fill in for Logan Henderson, who has been placed on the injured list with right elbow inflammation. As expected, Milwaukee has also activated recently-acquired reliever Shelby Miller from the injured list.
NFL
The Lions’ exhibition game against the Falcons last night ended early, after a Detroit player suffered a scary injury. Cornerback Morice Norris collapsed after a hard hit on a tackle in the fourth quarter, and appeared to be unconscious on the field. It took 20 minutes for medical staff to stabilize him so he could be taken by ambulance to a hospital. The teams eventually agreed to end the game, with Detroit leading 17-10. Lions officials later announced that Norris was in stable condition with “feeling and movement in all his extremities.”
In the Detroit back-up quarterback battle, Kyle Allen completed seven of eight passes for 120 yards and two touchdowns. Hendon Hooker struggled, completing seven of 10 passes, but for just 38 yards.
The Packers open their preseason tonight at home against the Jets.
High School
The Michigan High School Athletic Association has introduced a few changes for some high school sports this year.
The 11-Player football finals at Ford Field will be played over a three-day period, with Division 8, 4, 6 and 2 games on Friday, November 28th, and Division 7, 3, 5 and 1 games played Sunday, November 30th. That will accommodate Michigan State’s football game against Maryland at Ford Field on that Saturday.
For the first time, 8-Player semifinals will be staged at neutral sites on artificial turf. Previously, the team with the highest playoff-point average hosted the game. Higher-ranked teams will still host in the preliminary rounds.
Also in football, when a forward fumble goes out of bounds, the ball will now be spotted where the fumble occurred, instead of where the ball crossed the sideline.
In boys soccer, officials will now be allowed to penalize a team’s head coach for issues caused by players or assistants in the bench area. Only the team captain will be allowed to speak with an official between periods, unless the official initiates the conversation. Offenders will be yellow-carded.
In volleyball, some double contact by a player attempting to set the ball will be allowed if the next contact is by a teammate on the same side of the net. In the past, a double hit was called if the setter’s hands didn’t touch the ball simultaneously. Double hits will now be called only on two distinct contacts.
