Residents were out early Tuesday morning to begin voting in local elections. In Houghton County, voters had four millages to consider. Going on to approve just two items.
Canal View Senior Care Facility did earn its renewal of 2.1 mills. The Houghton County-funded elder care facility will return for another renewal after 2029.
Houghton County will join many others in the state that also have an elder nutrition millage. The vote ended in favor of collecting $ 1 million to fund Meals on Wheels, 4,336 to 3,871. Houghton County will collect the tax funds, and Copper Shores will manage the program’s operations. Foundation officials have said they will provide reports to the county commission throughout the year.
The county will return in November after failing to pass a jailhouse construction millage for the fourth time. The election ended with more than 4,600 voters saying no. The proposal did not pass by a margin of 1,000 votes.
Commissioners have stated that, leading up to the August 5th election, Houghton County needs a new facility, and deciding on a community could save money, before the state forces construction and makes decisions with no public input.
The Copper Country Intermediate School District’s millage relied on acceptance across Baraga, Houghton, Keweenaw, and Ontonagon counties. Residents chose to decline the district’s proposed construction bond that would have funded a $45,000,000 project to improve education in the Copper Country. The proposal did not pass, with 5868 voters denying the millage.
