Cash rules everything around the world. And developing strong financial skills from a young age can help individuals create stability throughout life.
This year, Breakwater Federal Credit Union has organized several types of engaging programs with youth in the Keweenaw Peninsula. This week, the credit union plans to continue building skills with young people by exploring budgeting and how to manage credit. Community program coordinator Kayliegh White says it can be intimidating to open a credit card, and there are plenty of ways to take a misstep.
We just kind of want to teach people how to compare credit cards, how to use them, how to pay them off, and then what a credit score is and how those payments affect that credit score, because their credit score is going to be important when they want to get an auto loan or when they want to buy their first home. So it’s all working up towards that point, so you’re starting small with your credit card and you’re building up to the point where you’re getting into home ownership and things. – Kayleigh White, Community Program Coordinator, Breakwater Federal Credit Union
