Charlie Morton turned in a great start in his Detroit debut last night, but the Tigers fell to the Phillies 2-0. Philadelphia starter Cristopher Sánchez held Detroit to just five singles over eight innings.
The Tigers open a home set against the Twins tonight. Casey Mize will pitch against Travis Adams. Coverage will begin at 6:15 on 99.3 The Lift.
Pitcher José Urquidy began a rehab stint with Single-A Lakeland with a 10-pitch perfect inning yesterday. Urquidy signed a free agent contract with Detroit last spring, while still recovering from Tommy John ligament replacement surgery. If things go well, he could join the Tigers late this month.
The Brewers completed a weekend thrashing of the Nationals with a 14-3 victory yesterday. Brice Turang hit two home runs. Joey Ortiz had two hits and drove in four runs. Newcomer Brandon Lockridge had two hits and drove in three runs. In the three-game set, Milwaukee outscored Washington 38-14. The Brewers collected 56 hits – a new team record for a three-game set.
The Brewers begin a series in Atlanta tonight. Quinn Priester will pitch against Erick Fedde.
Milwaukee has placed starter Jacob Misiorowski on the injured list. Misiorowski was struck on the shin by a line drive in Thursday’s game. He suffered a deep bruise, but no structural damage. Logan Henderson was brought up from Nashville to start last night’s game. He pitched into the fifth, and gave up a run on three hits.
Two relievers the Brewers designated for assignment are no longer with the team. Both Elvis Peguero and Bryan Hudson were claimed off waivers by the White Sox.
NFL
Lions coach Dan Campbell said yesterday that Hendon Hooker will start at quarterback in Friday’s pre-season game against the Falcons. Hooker is battling Kyle Allen for the backup slot behind Jared Goff. Allen started last week’s Hall of Fame Game, but did not impress.
