The Tigers’ bullpen struggled again, but Detroit held on for a 7-5 victory over the Phillies Saturday. The Tigers grabbed an early lead with third-inning solo home runs from Colt Keith and Kerry Carpenter. They tacked on three more in the top of the seventh, with homers from Javier Báez and Gleyber Torres. Tarik Skubal tossed six shutout innings, but left in the bottom of the seventh as Philly scored three runs. He struck out 10 batters. A two-run Báez triple in the top of the eighth provided the eventual winning margin, as the Phillies added two runs in the bottom of the eighth off Will Vest. New Tiger Kyle Finnegan relieved Vest with two outs in the eighth, and pitched a scoreless ninth to earn his first save as a Tiger, and his 21st of the season.
The Tigers visit the Phillies again this evening. Charlie Morton will make his Detroit debut against Cristopher Sánchez. Coverage will begin at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
To make room for Morton on the roster, Detroit sent reliever Brenan Hanifee down to Toledo.
The Brewers clobbered the Nationals again, 8-2. Brandon Woodruff allowed two runs over six innings, and struck out eight. Christian Yelich had three hits, including a homer. Brice Turang also collected three hits.
The Brewers play in Washington again this afternoon. Jacob Misiorowski will pitch against Brad Lord.
Sal Frelick left yesterday’s game in the second inning, after experiencing a problem with his surgically repaired left meniscus. He’s considered day-to-day.
