MLB
The Tigers couldn’t hold a late lead, and fell to the Phillies 5-4 last evening. Gleyber Torres’ three-run homer in the third inning put Detroit on the board. Jack Flaherty pitched six shutout innings, but left after giving up a single to Nick Castellanos in the seventh. Philadelphia plated three off Tyler Holton and Will Vest to tie the game. A solo Wenceel Pérez homer in the top of the eighth put Detroit back on top, but Philly added two off Brenan Hanifee in the bottom of the eighth to take the lead for good.
The Tigers visit the Phillies again today. Tarik Skubal will pitch against Zack Wheeler. Coverage will begin at 3:40 on 99.3 The Lift.
Detroit has released pitcher Tyler Owens, who had spent the season with the Mud Hens. That gave them room on the 40-man roster for newly-acquired reliever Rafael Montero. They made room for Montero in the 25-man roster by sending Chase Lee down to Toledo.
The Brewers routed the Nationals 16-9 last night. Blake Perkins hit two home runs, and William Contreras and Andrew Vaughn each went deep once. Contreras wound up with five of Milwaukee’s 25 hits, and Andruw Monasterio had four. Jose Quintana gave up two runs over five innings to earn the win.
The Brewers play in Washington again this afternoon. Brandon Woodruff will pitch against Jake Irvin.
Milwaukee placed Jackson Chourio on the injured list because of the hamstring injury he suffered in Tuesday’s game. He could miss most of August. Newly-acquired Brandon Lockridge will fill in.
College Football
The Michigan Tech football team has been picked to finish fifth in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference this fall. League coaches voted Ferris State into the top spot in the pre-season poll. The Bulldogs are the defending NCAA Division II national champions. Grand Valley State finished as runner-up, followed by Saginaw Valley State and Davenport. Northern Michigan was picked to finish last.
Local Hockey
The new Allen Ayotte Warming Area at the George Gipp Arena in Laurium will be dedicated today. Doors open at noon. Ayotte is expected to arrive with a police escort at 12:45, and the ceremony will begin at 1. Pasties, light snacks, and drinks will be available. Ayotte is being honored for many years of volunteer service to youth sports.
