Fast Pitch Softball
After the opening round was rained out last week, the Copper Country Fast Pitch Softball League tournament is set to begin tonight. Gold Standard and Finnish Coat placed first and second in the standings, and will have opening-round byes.
- Northern Wishes will play Old Bats of Michigan Made in one quarterfinal game at 5:30 at the Bone Yard. The winner will then face Gold Standard in a semifinal game.
- Superior Service Towing will take on JB’s Sales and Service in the other quarterfinal at the Houghton High School field. The winner will meet Finnish Coat in the other semifinal game.
The championship game is set for Wednesday.
MLB
The Tigers snapped their six-game losing streak with a 10-4 victory over the Blue Jays yesterday. Jack Flaherty struck out seven over six shutout innings. Toronto starter Max Scherzer struck out 11 through seven innings, but gave up a three-run homer to Gleyber Torres. Detroit erupted for seven more runs in the bottom of the eighth inning – all with two out. The Blue Jays scored four in the top of the ninth off Luke Jackson and Dietrich Enns, but the comeback fell well short.
The Tigers entertain the Diamondbacks tonight. Troy Melton will face Eduardo Rodriguez. Coverage will begin at 6:15 on 99.3 The Lift.
Kerry Carpenter returned to the Tigers’ lineup yesterday, after missing time with a sore hamstring. Trey Sweeney was returned to Toledo to make room.
Blake Perkins singled home Eric Haase with the winning run in the bottom of the ninth, as the Brewers shaded the Marlins 3-2. Brandon Woodruff allowed two runs over six innings in another effective start. Trevor Magill got the win in relief.
The Brewers entertain the Cubs tonight. Jacob Misiorowski will pitch against Matthew Boyd.
Milwaukee has sent pitcher Tobias Myers back down to Nashville.
