Margaret T. Kekko, 88, a lifelong area resident, passed away on Sunday, July 20, 2025 at U.P. Health System-Marquette Hospital following a short illness.
She was born on February 6, 1937 in Mason Location, Michigan to the late Frederick W. and Julia (Tornuff) Ziemnick. She attended Saint Cecilia School in Hubbell and later graduated from Sacred Heart High School in Calumet in 1955. Friends may remember her employment in the fabric department at Gartner’s Department Store in Hancock and later at the MTU Library and then the MTU Keweenaw Research Center at the Houghton County Airport location until her retirement.
She was married to C. Fred Kekko on April 16, 1977 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Calumet. He preceded her in death in 2013.
Margaret was a member of the Church of the Resurrection in Hancock where she belonged to their prayer shawl group and the funeral lunch committee. She was an avid supporter of MTU hockey and as a member of the MTU Blue Line Club. She and Fred loved to travel extensively, including trips to Alaska following the MTU hockey team and enjoying the northern lights, and to many other parts of the world. She also went on camping trips out West with three friends from Milwaukee. Margaret loved cooking, baking, knitting, hiking, and taking her pet dogs on walks.
Besides her parents and husband, she was also preceded in death by a sister Virginia Ann, a brother Michael, and nephew John Edward Ziemnick.
She is survived by a brother, James A. (Joy) Ziemnick of Calumet, sister-in-law Trudy Alter of California, a nephew Thomas (Nancy) Ziemnick of Virginia, and numerous nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Tuesday, July 29, 2025 at the Church of the Resurrection in Hancock with Reverend Father Corey Litzner to officiate. Interment will be at Forest Hill Cemetery in Houghton. Friends may call for an hour before the services at the church.
