The unemployment rate in the Upper Peninsula dipped slightly in June, but remained well above the statewide average.
Figures released by the state Department of Technology, Management and Budget showed a 6.5 percent jobless rate – down a tenth of a point from the May reading. The numbers released yesterday represent raw data and are not seasonally adjusted.
The actual number of unemployed Yoopers remained the same as in May, but an increase in the workforce and in the number of people employed led to the drop.
Fourteen of Michigan’s 18 labor markets saw their unemployment rates rise, and the state-wide rate increased from 5.3 to 5.4 percent.
All of the counties in our area are well above that level, with Keweenaw County at 6.8 percent, Houghton County at 6.9 percent, Baraga County at 7.9 percent, Iron County at 8.0 percent, and Ontonagon County at 8.4 percent.
