Northern Michigan counties that sustained significant damage during a late March ice storm will be eligible for federal help.
President Donald Trump has approved Michigan’s request for a disaster declaration covering the eastern portion of the Upper Peninsula, and the northern portion of the Lower Peninsula.
The storm knocked out power and communications and left hundreds of miles of roads blocked by fallen trees and debris.
Governor Gretchen Whitmer thanked the President and Michigan’s congressional delegation for supporting the request. First District U.S. Representative Jack Bergman called it a “true team effort.”
The declaration opens the path to Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Public Assistance for Mackinac county in the U.P., and Alcona, Alpena, Antrim, Charlevoix, Cheboygan, Crawford, Emmet, Kalkaska, Montmorency, Oscoda, Otsego, and Presque Isle Counties in the Lower Peninsula, along with the Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians.
