In Copper Country Twilight League baseball last evening…
- Northern Driveline and Coldwell Banker Craig Heinonen traded shutouts, with a 6-0 win for Northern Driveline, and a 7-0 victory for Coldwell Banker.
- Garnet Garage took two from Houghton Building Supply-Stanton, 5-0 and 7-3.
Fast Pitch Softball
Regular-season play in the Copper Country Fast Pitch Softball League wrapped up last night, as Finnish Coat defeated Northern Wishes 5-2. Krista Carello struck out 10, and earned the win. For Finnish Coat, Ryleigh Johnson had a double and Brynn Arko and Ashlee Johnson each had two singles. For Northern Wishes, Meg Ruohonen had a double and Theresa Anderson, Sylvia Aho and Larissa Peterson each had a single.
That sets up the post-season tournament, which begins with the quarterfinal round tonight. Gold Standard and Finnish Coat placed first and second in the standings, and will have opening-round byes.
- Fourth-seed Northern Wishes plays fifth-seed Old Bats of Michigan Made at 7 at the Chassell field.
- Third-seed Superior Service takes on sixth-seed JB’s Sales and Service at 7 at the Bone Yard.
If tonight’s games are rained out, both the quarterfinals and the semifinals will be played Monday. The championship game is set for a week from tonight.
MLB
The Tigers’ mid-season spiral continued with a sloppy 8-5 loss to the Pirates last night. Pittsburgh rocked Casey Mize for five runs on 10 hits over four innings. Jake Rogers and Jamai Jones homered.
The Tigers have dropped eight of their last nine, and visit the Pirates again this afternoon. Troy Melton will come up from Toledo to make his major league debut for Detroit. Bailey Falter will counter for Pittsburgh. Coverage will begin at 12:10 on 99.3 The Lift.
Kerry Carpenter had a single in four at-bats as he began a rehab assignment with the Mud Hens last evening. He’s been out since late June with a hamstring strain. Sawyer Gipson-Long has been pulled from his rehab stint in Toledo. He’s still struggling with a neck injury.
The Brewers’ 11-game win streak ended with a 1-0 loss to the Mariners. Milwaukee batters managed just two hits. Seattle only had four, but one was a sixth-inning home run off Nick Mears by Cal Raleigh. Jacob Misiorowski struck out seven, but left in the fourth inning because he’s approaching a pitch count ceiling in his rookie season.
The Brewers visit the Mariners again this afternoon. Quinn Priester will pitch against Luis Castillo.
