The Tigers’ mid-summer losing streak reached six games Saturday evening, with a 4-1 loss to the Rangers. Keider Montero pitched into the fifth, allowing four runs on four hits – the big one a three-run homer by Rowdy Tellez. Bennan Hanifee, Brant Hurter and Carlos Hernández held Texas hitless for the remainder of the game. Detroit collected just three hits, including a ninth-inning home run by Riley Greene.
Detroit will play at Texas again tonight. Tarik Skubal will face Jacob Latz. Coverage will begin at 6:40 on 99.3 The Lift. Latz is filling for Rangers’ ace Nathan Eovaldi, who was scratched with back stiffness.
The Brewers held off the Dodgers 8-7 Saturday. Freddy Peralta gave up four runs over five innings, but left with a lead, and earned the win. Isaac Collins and Joey Ortiz homered.
The Brewers have won nine straight, and play in Los Angeles again this afternoon. Jose Quintana will pitch against Clayton Kershaw.
Sal Frelick’s hamstring strain has sent him to the injured list. Frelick suffered the injury while making a diving catch in a game last Sunday. Blake Perkins has been brought off the injured list to fill in.
The Brewers have inked a deal with their first pick in the recent MLB Draft. Hard-hitting high school shortstop Bradey Ebel will forego his commitment to LSU. He is the son of Dodgers coach Dino Ebel.
Canal Run
Local runners dominated the Canal Run in Hancock Saturday:
- Nik Thomas of Hancock won the half-marathon, more than eight minutes faster than runner-up Jared Chrysostrom of Pendleton, South Carolina. Kate Abbott of Houghton was the fastest women’s finisher, and fifth overall.
- Houghton’s Clayton Sayen claimed the Bob Olson Memorial 10-Mile Run, three minutes better than Ryan Normand of Tempe, Arizona. Cedar Gordon of Houghton was the top women’s finisher, and 10th overall.
- Paul Halonen of Calumet won the 10-mile walk, with Kathy Marino of Hancock second.
- Alex Guy of St. Augustine, Florida took the five-mile run, 36 seconds ahead of Hancock’s Birk Seagren. Ingrid Seagren was the top women’s finisher, and ninth overall.
- Joan Rundman of Hancock won the five-mile walk, with Joseph Vial of Framington Hills second.
