Shirley Jean Velmer, age 82 of Baraga, Michigan, passed away peacefully at her son Michael’s home with her son Michael and family at her side on Sunday, July 6, 2025.
She was born to Leslie and Mildred (Forcia) LaFernier on August 4, 1942 in Keweenaw Bay, Michigan. She and her five siblings enjoyed spending time together entertaining guests, playing cards, and hanging out with friends. Growing up on Mission Road was full of fun and adventures especially with her sisters Helen, Carol and her dear friend Joyce.
Shirley graduated from Baraga High School with the Class of 1960. On June 3, 1961, she married Robert Velmer at St. Ann’s Church in Baraga. Together they devoted their lives to their children Kimberly and Michael and later on, their grandchildren.
A familiar face to many, Shirley worked as a short-order cook at the A&W, now Baraga Drive-In, for 35 years—always quick with a smile and known for her strong work ethic. She was a dedicated member of the Most Holy Name of Jesus Church, the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community, and the Ojibwa Seniors.
Shirley was a creative soul who found joy in knitting, crocheting and gifting each one of her grandchildren with her handmade creations. She gave generously of her time as a leader for both the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. Her heart was devoted to her family, faith, and community. She was always willing to help anyone in need.
She is survived by her son, Michael (Jacquelyn) Velmer of L’Anse; her son-in-law, Cyril “Joe” Fortier; sister, Helen Tollefson of Skanee; eight grandchildren: Kyle LaPlante, Tyler (Faith) LaPlante, Joel (Abby) Fortier, Michaela (Louis) Raiger, Jessica, Daniel, Rachael, and Zachary Velmer; and six great-grandchildren: Lilianna, Kylee, Titan, Madison, Braylin, and Noah.
She is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Robert Velmer; daughter, Kimberly Velmer Fortier; her parents, Leslie and Mildred LaFernier; brothers, James, Melvin, and Stanley LaFernier; and sister, Carol Hamm.
Visitation will take place on Friday, July 11th from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart of Jesus Church in L’Anse, MI. A Rosary will be recited at 10:40 a.m., followed by a Funeral Mass at 11:00 a.m., officiated by Fr. Ben Rivard. Burial will be in the Assinins Cemetery, following a luncheon to be held in the church hall.
