The Canal Road M-26 stoplight will go into full operation tomorrow. Over the past week, drivers traveling down the hill into downtown Houghton, or driving south to Walmart, should have noticed a flashing yellow signal on M-26 at the Canal Road intersection.
The Michigan Department of Transportation recently installed a new traffic signal to improve safety. For several years, it has been difficult to turn left onto the highway from Canal Road due to vehicles traveling at a high rate of speed before slowing down where the speed limit drops from 45 miles per hour to 35 mph.
The state’s transportation department will transition the new signal to cycle through red, amber, and green lights starting tomorrow. Expectations anticipate transitioning the signal to a flashing yellow light in the winter months. Please use caution when traveling on M-26 near Canal Road. The highway speed is 45 miles per hour, and reduces to 35 miles per hour near the Dunkin Donuts.
