Trey Sweeney’s three-run homer in the top of the 10th inning powered the Tigers to a 7-2 victory over the Guardians yesterday. Most of the game was a classic pitchers’ duel, with Tarik Skubal striking out 10 batters over seven scoreless innings. Cleveland broke through with a run off Bailey Horn in the bottom of the eighth. Detroit tied the game in the top of the ninth. With two outs, Spencer Torkelson was hit by a pitch. Zach McKinstry replaced him as a pinch-runner, stole second on a disputed play, and advanced third on a ground-out. With two outs, and a two-strike count on Parker Meadows, McKinstry broke for home and scored standing up when Emmanuel Clase’s pitch in the dirt squibbed between the legs of catcher Bo Naylor. Sweeney’s blow in the 10th gave the Tigers the lead, and Riley Greene added a two-run insurance shot.
The Tigers open a home set against the Rays tonight. Detroit has not named a starter, but could use Keider Montero, perhaps behind an opener. Shane Baz will pitch for Tampa Bay. Coverage will begin at 6:15 on 99.3 The Lift.
The Tigers have also added reliever PJ Poulin to their 40-man roster. He’ll take the spot left empty when Sean Guenther was moved to the 60-day injured list. Poulin has not been called up from the Mud Hens, but has an opt-out clause in his contract that he could have used had he not been added to the 40-man roster.
Brandon Woodruff’s long-awaited return to the starting rotation was everything the Brewers had hoped for, as Milwaukee dispatched the Mets 3-1 yesterday. Pitching in a Major League game for the first time in nearly two years, Woodruff gave up a run on two hits, and struck out eight. Jackson Chourio backed him up with a two-run homer.
The Brewers begin a home set against the Dodgers tonight. Freddy Peralta will start against Yoshinobu Yamamoto.
With Woodruff back on the job, starter Chad Patrick was sent down to Nashville.
Add another Tiger to the American League All-Star roster. To the surprise of no one, Tarik Skubal has been named to the pitching staff. He joins Gleyber Torres, Riley Greene and Javier Báez, who were voted into the starting lineup. Pitchers are not included in the voting, and are selected by league officials.
The Brewers also placed a pitcher on the team. Freddy Peralta will represent the Crew at the Summer Classic. Two former Tigers having impressive comeback seasons were also named to the National League pitching staff – Robbie Ray of the Giants, who has worked his way back from Tommy John ligament replacement surgery, and Matthew Boyd, who is experiencing a career resurgence with the Cubs.
Starting pitchers have yet to be designated.
All-Star reserves for both leagues were also introduced yesterday. Neither the Tigers nor the Brewers had any players included.
