Mr. Paul Vernon Kargela, son of Elsie and Abiel Kargela of Calumet, passed away on June 30 at age 76 in his home in Hubbell where his wife of 49 years, Lynn, took such loving care of him during his last two months of life.
Paul was a Hancock Beach bum three months of the year who loved 60s and 70s music, reading, traveling, and going to the mall with the guys. He shared his long summer days of beaching and swimming with his daughter, Kim; his grandson, Ryan; his many nieces and nephews; and his fellow beach enthusiasts.
Paul worked at Houghton County Social Services for thirty years. Retirement gave him more time to read and travel. Buying and reading books about historical figures, athletes, hippies, and musicians made him well-read and impossible to beat at trivia. Paul enjoyed traveling to sunny destinations with Lynn. His most memorable family trips were to Michigan’s Adventure, Disney World, and Jamaica with Lynn, Kim, and Ryan. Paul’s favorite role was being Ryan’s Grampa, and his heart broke when Ryan passed away at age 12 in 2017.
Paul’s family will miss his kindness and generosity to infinity and beyond. They think he is possibly the smartest person ever who always had a witty story or joke to share.
A graveside service will be held for Paul on Wednesday July 9, 2025 at 11:00 am in the Lake View Cemetery located in Calumet, Michigan. A Celebration Of Life service will be held following the graveside service in the Siskiwit Reception Hall.
The Erickson Crowley Peterson Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
