During the year fire departments scramble to help when an emergency takes place. The departments work together to assist on scenes. But once a year they’ll compete to find out who has the best crew in the Keweenaw peninsula. This weekend Laurium hosts the Copper Country Volunteer Firefighters tournament. Fire chief Dan Zupiena says it’s great to see the young volunteers get into the weekend’s contests.
“It’s a one-day competition. But later on at night, after the competition is over. If somebody had a big fire, everybody would be pitching in. And running to each other’s aid. So the sense of camaraderie and being together in a non-emergency situation at the tournament is good to see each other. – Dan Zubiena, fire chief, Laurium fire department
While departments do have a lot of fun throughout the day. The weekend brings the region’s firefighters together to celebrate the firefighting community and the association’s annual meeting. Zubiena adds it’s a great opportunity for the community to meet their local department, and learn about the commitment to public safety. Pay attention to the association’s Facebook page for weather updates.
