Big Annie receives some big recognition. Over the last couple of years, residents of Calumet formed a committee to erect a statue of Annie Klobacher Clemenc within the village. In the 1990’s she was the first individual inducted into the Michigan Women’s Hall of Fame. Her story is intertwined with the Keweenaw Peninsula, copper mining, and the nation’s labor movement.
As a part of celebration plans for America’s 250th anniversary in 2026, the America250MI Committee announced it will award 50,000 dollars to the Big Annie Statue Project. Co-chair for the state project Anita Campbell says the support from America250 brings the statue one step closer to reality. Over the past two years, the project has received support from local businesses, upper peninsula labor organizations, and individuals from close to home and from across the country.
America250’s history grant program seeks to support projects and programs across the country that highlight the country’s diverse and rich history for current and future generations to learn about. The America 250 Mi committee was established in 2020 out of direction from Governor Gretchen Whitmer to have the Historical Society of Michigan and Michigan History Center work on plans to celebrate the country’s momentous occasion.
