Breakwater Federal Credit Union and Michigan Tech’s Center for Educational Outreach partner to improve financial literacy on campus. Recently Breakwater FCU and MTU’s Center for Educational Outreach announced a partnership to offer Financial Literacy Education for incoming TRIO Upward Bound students.
The six-week summer program will allow students to explore subjects, engage in hands-on activities, and learn new skills. The first session of the program dove into banking, earning money, developing smart money habits, and how to budget expenses. During the exercise, students chose a part-time job and worked with a budget to pay bills such as rent and utilities, transportation, and groceries. The next session will have students learn about building an emergency fund, and how to save money for large purchases. As well as teach students the importance of building credit and how to look out for financial pitfalls.
