High School

Four local high school softball players have received All-State honors from the Michigan High School Softball Coaches Association. Brooke Koskela and Sadie Biekkola from Hancock, and Payton Goldsworthy and Emily Jokela from Lake Linden-Hubbell each were awarded Honorable Mention status in Division Four.

Twilight League

In Copper Country Twilight League baseball last night…

Garnet Garage outslugged Coldwell Banker Craig Heinonen 12-10. Kade Farrell homered.
Houghton Building Supply-Stanton edged REL Technologies 9-8.

In Copper Country Fast Pitch Softball League play this evening…

MLB

Javier Báez hit two home runs, as the Tigers claimed a 7-3 victory over the Pirates last night. Wenceel Pérez and Riley Greene also went deep. Casey Mize gave up three runs over six innings, and earned his seventh victory of the season.

The Tigers host the Pirates again tonight. Tarik Skubal will start against Andrew Heaney. Coverage will begin at 6:15 on 99.3 The Lift.

Tests on the sore pinkie finger that forced Will Vest out of Sunday’s game have turned up no significant problem. He’s considered day-to-day.

Reliever Alex Lange tossed a scoreless inning for the West Michigan Whitecaps, as he began a rehab assignment. Jackson Jobe underwent ulnar collateral ligament reconstruction surgery in his right elbow Monday. He’ll likely be out for at least a year.

After picking him up on waivers from the Phillies, the Tigers have added reliever Carlos Hernández to their roster. Tyler Owens was sent back to Toledo to make room.

The Brewers couldn’t hold an early lead, and fell 5-3 to the Cubs last evening. Chad Patrick allowed four runs over five innings, and took the loss. Isaac Collins homered.

That series continues tonight in Chicago. Jacob Misiorowski will pitch against Jameson Taillon.

The player Milwaukee got from Chicago in the Aaron Civale trade got off to a good start with the Nashville Sounds last night. Andrew Vaughn hit a grand slam.

NHL

The Florida Panthers won the Stanley Cup last night, routing the Edmonton Oilers 5-1 in game six of this year’s championship series. Sam Bennett won the Conn Smythe Trophy as the series’ most valuable player.

NBA

The Pacers host the Thunder tonight. Oklahoma City leads the NBA Championship Series 3-2.

Youth Soccer

Signup continues through Monday for the upcoming Houghton FC Select Soccer season. Select Soccer is an opportunity for players interested in a more competitive level of soccer with some travel involved. There are opportunities for boys and girls with birth years from 2007 to 2017.
