High School
The Jeffers baseball team’s season ended with a 6-3 loss to Norway in a Division Four regional semifinal yesterday afternoon. The Jets grabbed an early lead when Blake Heltonen drove home Brogan Turner with a sacrifice bunt in the top of the first inning. The Knights tied the game in the bottom of the second… then took command with three runs in the third, two more in the fourth. Cody Turner had two hits, including a triple, for the Jets.
The Lake Linden-Hubbell softball team will play its regional tournament games Saturday at Ishpeming, opening against Superior Central in a semifinal at 11:00. Norway will play Gogebic in the second semifinal at 1, and the championship game will be played at 3.

College Hockey
Michigan Tech has confirmed that new head hockey coach Bill Muckalt’s assistant at his previous job will be joining him in Houghton. Benton Maass spent last season with Muckalt at Lindenwood. He played college hockey at New Hampshire and Minnesota State, and spent some time in the AHL and ECHL. Muckalt also confirmed that Tyler Shelast will remain on the staff as an assistant coach. A third assistant coach has yet to be hired.
MLB
The Tigers outlasted a lengthy rain delay, then outlasted the White Sox 5-4 last evening. Colt Keith’s bloop double in the top of the eighth drove home the winning run. Detroit’s other four runs all scored in the first inning, on RBI singles by Riley Greene, Dillon Dingler and Javier Báez. Sawyer Gipson-Long’s return to the rotation after missing more than a year with injuries was short – he pitched into the fourth, and was charged with three runs on five hits.
Detroit wraps up that set in Chicago this afternoon. Casey Mize will start against Sean Burke. Coverage will begin at 1:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
The Tigers sent reliever Dylan Smith back down to the Mud Hens yesterday. They also lost reliever Ryan Cusick, who was claimed off waivers by the White Sox.
The Brewers walloped the Reds 9-1 yesterday. DL Hall opened with three shutout innings. Quinn Priester relieved him, allowed a run over four innings, and earned the win. Jackson Chourio, Daz Cameron and Isaac Collins homered for Milwaukee.
The Brewers have today off, and host the Padres tomorrow night.
NHL
The Oilers came from behind to claim a 4-3 overtime victory against the Panthers in the opening game of the Stanley Cup championship series last night. Leon Draisaitl netted the game-winner.
NBA
The NBA championship series opens tonight, when the Pacers visit the Thunder.
