Mary graduated from Calumet High School, class of 1951 and graduated from St. Joseph’s Hospital School of Nursing in Hancock, MI class of 1955. She was employed at Calumet Public Hospital (now Aspirus) for many years along with several other hospitals and nursing homes in Michigan and Wisconsin. Upon retiring she began volunteering at elementary schools in Sheboygan and Manitowoc, WI where she enjoyed working with first and second graders for over 10 years. When Mary returned to live in the UP, she continued her school volunteering at CLK elementary. Mary utilized her lifelong passion of working in the soil by volunteering at the Lake Linden post office and later the Houghton County Museum, tending to the flowers and bushes.
She had a vegetable garden throughout her life and shared her bounty with others. In the summer months, she could be found out somewhere in the bush picking thimbleberries, blackberries, and blueberries. Friends and family enjoyed her delicious homemade thimbleberry jam. She loved sewing and crocheting and made many doll clothes for her children, grandchildren, and others.
Mary had made numerous friends during her time at Maple Lane Apartments which was her final home. Her most special friend was Nancy Martin who was there for her in good times and bad. Nancy took Mary to doctor appointments near and far and went above and beyond, helping her in many aspects of life. Mary’s family is ever grateful to Nancy for all the care and friendship she showed to her.
Mom loved her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren with all her heart and traveled to see them whenever she could until her health no longer allowed it. She loved spending time with all children and was a surrogate mother/grandmother to many.
Mary will be deeply missed by her family and friends.
