In district baseball tournament action Saturday…
- Division Three – Calumet shaded Westwood 6-4 in one semifinal game. Hancock fell to Negaunee 4-2 in the other semi. Ben Keranen had two hits and drove in two runs for the Bulldogs. Negaunee then eliminated Calumet 7-1 in the championship game. Owen Cardinal and Evan DellAngelo combined to strike out 14 Copper Kings batters, while allowing just three hits.
In softball Saturday…
- Division Three – Calumet eliminated Jeffers 10-5 in a semifinal contest. Jaysa Wilks had three hits and drove in two runs for the Copper Kings. Meg Rouhonen had a home run and a double, and drove in all five Jets runs. Negaunee dispatched Westwood 11-1 in the other semifinal. In the title game, the Copper Kings scored four runs in the first inning, but the Miners powered past them for a 15-5 victory. Chloe Coppo had two hits and drove in two runs for Calumet.
At the U.P track and field finals will at Kingsford Saturday…
- Marquette won the Division One boys team title. Houghton placed fifth, and Calumet eighth. Calumet’s Matthew Frantti won the discus throw, and finished second to Kingsford’s mason Tappy in the shot put by a scant three-quarters of an inch. The Houghton 4×800 relay team won.
- Negaunee took the Division One girls team crown, with Houghton fifth and Calumet 10th. Amy Sziber of the Gremlins set personal bests in the adaptive 100 and 200-meter dashes, and the shot put.
- Pickford claimed the Division Two boys team title. West Iron County was ninth, and Jeffers 11th.
- Pickford also claimed the Division Two girls team championship. West Iron County was a close second, Hancock finished ninth, and Jeffers 11th. Bristol Shamion of the Wykons took the 100 and 300-meter hurdles, and the high jump. Jeffers’ Brielle Anderson won the long jump.
- Newberry won the Division Three boys team title. Lake Linden-Hubbell was second, Forest Park sixth, Chassell seventh, L’Anse 11th, Baraga 14th, and Ontonagon and Dollar Bay-Tamarack City tied for 18th. Chassell’s Kalvin Kytta won the 800, 1600 and 3200-meter runs. Connor Kemppainen from L’Anse medaled in the 110-meter hurdles, and Lukas Axford from Lake Linden claimed the 300-meter hurdles. Lake Linden’s 4×400 relay team won.
- Newberry also took the Division Three girls team title. Lake Linden-Hubbell again finished second. Dollar Bay-Tamarack City tied for sixth place. Forest Park finished eighth, Ewen-Trout Creek tied for ninth, L’Anse and Chassell tied for 11th, Ontonagon placed 14th, and Baraga 17th. Emily Jokela of the Lakes won the 400-meter run, and the 100 and 300-meter hurdles. Lake Linden won the 4×400 relay, and Ontonagon took the 4×100 relay. Dollar Bay’s Kiera Isaacson claimed the high jump, and Laila Bell of the Blue Bolts win the long jump.

MLB
The bats on both sides were quiet, as the Royals edged the Tigers 1-0 Saturday. Detroit collected just two hits. Kansas City got four, and scored the game’s only run off Beau Brieske in the eighth inning. Tarik Skubal struck out seven over seven innings.
Detroit plays at Kansas City again today. Keider Montero will start against Kris Bubic. Coverage will begin at 1:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
The Brewers earned their sixth straight win by routing the Phillies 17-7. Rhys Hoskins hit two home runs, the second as part of an eight-run fourth inning. Jackson Chourio had five hits and a homer, and Christian Yelich had four hits. Chad Patrick gave up two runs over six innings to earn the win.
The Brewers visit the Phillies again this afternoon. Jose Quintana will return from the injured list to pitch against Ranger Suárez.
NBA
The Pacers sewed up the NBA Eastern Conference title last night, with a 125-108 victory over the Knicks. Indiana wins the series 4-2, and will visit the Thunder Thursday to open the NBA Championships.
