In district baseball tournament action yesterday…
- Division Two – Houghton dropped a 1-0 heartbreaker to Escanaba in a semifinal game. Nolan Brink’s single in the fifth drove home Bryce Bichler with the game’s only run. Cannon Arnt struck out 12 for the Eskymoes, and Jackson Vondoloski fanned eight for the Gremlins. Houghton loaded the bases in the sixth, but couldn’t score. Escanaba lost to Kingsford in the final 7-1.
- Division Four District 97 – Jeffers took the title, with a 6-1 victory over Gogebic. Copper Mountain Conference MVP Cody Turner outdueled Conference Top Pitcher CJ Waino, recording 12 strikeouts while allowing just five hits. Turner was intentionally walked four times. Brogan Turner, Blake Heltunen and Pierce Johnson each had two hits. The Jets dispatched Ewen-Trout Creek 8-0 in the semifinals, and the Miners shut down Lake Linden-Hubbell 24-0. The Lakes got just one hit. Jeffers will face Norway in a regional semifinal game Wednesday at 4:00 in Felch.
- Division Four District 98 – The Knights won their district title with an 8-1 victory over North Dickinson. The Nordics had defeated L’Anse 8-2 in the semifinals. Daniel Connor had three hits for the Purple Hornets.
In baseball today…
- Division Three at the Driving Park – Westwood faces Calumet at 11:00. Coverage will begin at 10:45 on the Voice of the Copper Kings, KBear 102.3. Hancock meets Negaunee at 1:00. The winners will play for the title at 3:00. We’ll air the championship game if Calumet advances.
In softball yesterday…
- Division Four District 98 – Lake Linden-Hubbell mercied L’Anse 15-1 in the district’s only semifinal, then dispatched Hancock 9-5 to win the first district title in team history. Payton Goldsworthy struck out 10 in the opener, and hit a home run. Emily Jokela hit for the cycle, and Ashlyn Steves had a pair of doubles. Jokela struck out 16 in the title game, and hit a double and a home run. Goldsworthy also homered, and Steves had three hits. The Lakes will face Superior Central in a regional semifinal next Saturday morning at 11 at Ishpeming.
- Division Four District 97 – Gogebic won the title with a 13-0 victory over Ironwood. The Red Devils defeated Ontonagon 19-6 in the first semifinal, and the Miners eliminated Forest Park 19-7 in the other. Gogebic will play Norway in a regional semifinal next Saturday at 1:00 at Ishpeming.
In softball today…
- Division Three at Westwood – Westwood takes on Negaunee at 11:00. Calumet plays Jeffers at 1:00. Coverage will begin at 12:45 on 97.7 The Wolf, and we’ll broadcast the championship game around 3:00 if the Copper Kings advance.
The U.P track and field finals will be staged today at Kingsford.
Hancock won the Division Two boys golf team championship at Oak Crest yesterday. Jeffers finished second, Dollar Bay-Tamarack City was sixth and Forest Park 10th. Owen Kuehnau from Stephenson medaled with a 71. Griffin Heinonen of the Jets was runner-up, with a 77, and Jackson Sintkowski of the Bulldogs was third with a 78. The Bulldogs, Jets and Blue Bolts combined to take eight of the 11 top positions. See full results here.
Newberry won the girls title, with Jeffers placing fifth. Dollar Bay’s Kiera Isaacson was the top local individual finisher, in 12th place. See full results here.
The Hancock High School Athletic Hall of Fame will induct one individual and nine teams this year. The individual is Chuck Lucchesi, who excelled as a football lineman for the Bulldogs and Michigan Tech, and eventually signed a pro contract with the Houston Oilers. He also lettered three years in track, and was a defenseman on several state and national championship youth hockey teams. The teams are the undefeated football squads from 1944, 1961, 1967, 1969, 1983 and 1984, along with 1999 and 2016 the state championship hockey teams, and the 1999 state runner-up girls basketball team. The Tigers broke out to an early lead, and held off the Royals 7-5 last night. Riley Greene, Dillon Dingler and Spencer Torkelson homered.
Detroit has won five straight, and plays at Kansas City again today. Tarik Skubal will start against Michael Wacha. Coverage will begin at 3:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
The Tigers added rookie starter Jackson Jobe to the injured list yesterday with a flexor strain. Pitcher Dylan Smith has been called up from Toledo. Detroit added some pitching depth by claiming Ryan Cusick off waivers from the Athletics. Starter Alex Cobb will begin a rehab assignment with the West Michigan Whitecaps. He’s been out all season with hip inflammation.
The Brewers have also won five straight, after last night’s 6-2 victory over the Phillies. Christian Yelich hit two home runs.
The Brewers visit the Phillies again this afternoon. Chad Patrick will pitch against Jesús Luzardo.
NBA
The Knicks visit the Pacers tonight. Indiana leads the Eastern Conference championship series 3-2.
