MDARD awards 1.6 million dollars to county fair boards supporting infrastructure improvements around the state. Each year Michigan celebrates the state’s communities and agricultural heritage with 80 county fairs.
But none quite matches the excitement that comes to the Houghton County Fairgrounds in Hancock each summer. The Houghton County Fair Board will receive 63,200 dollars to support electrical upgrades and ensure safe lighting, sound, and ventilation in buildings and on the grounds.
The grant was one of 29 awarded by the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development. Gogebic County’s Fair is another organization in the western Upper Peninsula to earn funding. Gogebic County plans to use its 80,000 dollar award to support accessibility and safety improvements. Other grant awards supported paving projects, incident command operations, and infrastructure improvements for our buildings such as the animal barn.
Houghton County Fair will take place from August 21st to the 24th.
