High School
The Houghton softball team’s season ended with a 10-0 loss to Petoskey in a district tournament semifinal yesterday. The Northmen held the Gremlins to just three hits, and put the game away with six runs in the sixth inning.
In district baseball tournament action today…
- Division Two at Escanaba – Houghton faces the host Eskymoes at noon, with coverage at 11:45 on the Voice of the Gremlins, 97.7 The Wolf. Sault Ste Marie plays Kingsford at 2:00. The championship game will begin around 4:00. We’ll broadcast it on 97.7 The Wolf if the Gremlins advance.
- Division Four District 97 at Ironwood – Gogebic will play Lake Linden-Hubbell at 11:00, and Jeffers will take on Ewen-Trout Creek at 1:00. The championship game will follow at 3:00.
- Division Four District 98 at North Dickinson – L’Anse takes on the host Nordics at 10:00, and Norway plays Bark River-Harris at 1:00. The title game will begin at 4:00.
In baseball tomorrow…
- Division Three at the Driving Park – Westwood faces Calumet at 11:00. Coverage will begin at 10:45 on the Voice of the Copper Kings, KBear 102.3. Hancock meets Negaunee at 1:00. The winners will play for the title at 3:00. Well air the championship game if Calumet advances.
In softball today…
- Division Four District 98 at the Driving Park – L’Anse faces Lake Linden-Hubbell at 3:00. The winner will play Hancock in the championship game at 5:00.
- Division Four District 97 at Ironwood – Ontonagon plays the host Red Devils at 11:00, and Bessemer faces Forest Park at 1:00. The championship game will begin at 3.
In softball tomorrow…
- Division Three at Westwood – Westwood takes on Negaunee at 11:00. Calumet plays Jeffers at 1:00. Coverage will begin at 12:45 on 97.7 The Wolf, and we’ll broadcast the championship game around 3:00 if the Copper Kings advance.
The U.P track and field finals will be staged tomorrow at Kingsford.
The Division Two golf finals will be played today at Oak Crest in Norway.
Cody Turner from Jeffers High School baseball team has been named the Copper Mountain Conference’s Most Valuable Player. CJ Wainio of Gogebic was honored as the league’s top pitcher. Luke Paul of the Jets and Cody Kurta Ironwood shared Coach of the Year honors.
Local First Team honorees include Nick Andrews, Brogan Turner and Blake Heltunen from the Jets, Blake Harden from L’Anse, Caden Besonen from Ewen-Trout Creek, and Dyceson Drew from Ontonagon.

Payton Goldsworthy from Lake Linden-Hubbell was named the Copper Mountain Conference softball MVP. Teammate Emily Jokela earned top pitcher honors. Jeffers’ Wes Frahm was voted Coach of the Year.
Goldsworthy and Jokela were joined on the First Team by Lakes teammates Cleo Milkey and Kyara Mills, Sylvia Allen from L’Anse, Naomi Frahm and Meg Rouhonen from Jeffers, and Alli Bobula from Ontonagon.

The Tigers had yesterday off, and open a series at Kansas City tonight. Casey Mize will start against Seth Lugo. Coverage will begin at 7:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
The Brewers also had yesterday off, and visit the Phillies this evening. DL Hall will pitch against Taijuan Walker.
Struggling Milwaukee reliever Joel Payamps cleared waivers yesterday, and has been assigned to Nashville.
NBA
The Knicks extended the Eastern Conference championship series with a 111-94 victory over the Pacers last night. Indiana leads the series 3-2, and will host game six tomorrow night.
NHL
The Oilers claimed the Western Conference title with a 6-3 victory over the Stars last evening. Edmonton will host the Panthers in game one of the Stanley Cup championship series Wednesday.
Fishing
The Sixth Annual “Season Kickoff“ Walleye Fishing Tournament will be held tomorrow on Portage Lake, Torch Lake and the Sturgeon River. Boats can begin launching at 6:00 at Chassell Centennial Park or the Lake Linden Park. Fishing ends at 2:00. The registration fee is $100 per team. Sign up this evening between 6:00 and 7:00 at the Monte Carlo in Hancock.
