High School
In softball yesterday…
- Hancock defeated Calumet 3-1. Sadie Biekkola pitched four no-hit innings to pick up the win. Sofie Freeman had three hits and Lucy Biekkola had two hits for the Bulldogs. Lena Myhren struck out six for the Copper Kings.
- Jeffers dropped two to Westwood, 10-6 and 24-7. The Patriots scored four runs in the top of the ninth to claim the opener. Pearl Raffaelli had three hits for the Jets. Westwood outhit Jeffers 19-8 in the nightcap. The Jets grabbed a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, but the Patriots countered with 10 in the top of the second. Elli Kuntze had two hits and drove in four runs for Jeffers.
In softball today…
- The Division Two District Tournament will be held today at Escanaba. The host Eskymoes will face Sault Ste Marie at noon. Houghton will take on Petoskey at 2:00. The winners will winners play for title at 4:00. Coverage of Houghton’s semifinal game will begin around 1:45 on the Voice of the Gremlins, 97.7 The Wolf. We’ll also broadcast the championship game, if Houghton advances.
In golf yesterday…
- At the U.P. Division One Boys Finals at Sage Run, Marquette took the team title. Houghton finished fourth, Calumet sixth, and West Iron County 14th. Boden Moore of the Sentinels shot a 70 to take individual honors. Individually, Jack Sayen of the Gremlins and Robert Loukus of the Copper Kings tied for 12th place, with rounds of 81.
- At the U.P. Division One Girls Finals at Sweetgrass, Escanaba claimed the team title. Calumet finished third, and Houghton 10th. Kamrie Scott of the Eskymoes medaled with an 80 – 10 strokes better than the runner-up. Calumet’s Maretta Kangas placed ninth, with a 100.

- North Central won the boys team title, 10 strokes better than Lake Linden-Hubbell. Ontonagon finished third. Nathan Pipkin from North Central medaled with a 76. Tyler Axford of the Lakes tied for third, with an 82. Jack Nelson and Abi Pestka of the Gladiators tied for seventh with rounds of 86.
- Ontonagon won the girls team crown. Summer States, Madyson Pantti and Samantha Bailey claimed the top three positions individually, and Olivia Lockhart tied for fifth.

MLB
The Tigers completed a series sweep of the Giants with a 4-3 victory yesterday. Down 3-0 in the bottom of the fifth, Detroit plated four runs to take the lead, and held on for the win. Colt Keith drove in two with a double, and Justyn-Henry Malloy’s two-run single proved to be the game-winner.
The Tigers have today off, and open a series at Kansas City tomorrow night. Casey Mize will start against Seth Lugo. Coverage will begin at 7:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
For the second game in a row, the Brewers claimed a walk-off win. Caleb Durbin’s sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 10th gave Milwaukee a 6-5 victory over the Red Sox. Jake Bauers homered for the Crew.
The Brewers also have today off, and visit the Phillies tomorrow. Quinn Priester will pitch against Taijuan Walker.
NBA
The Thunder claimed the Western Conference championship last night, with a 124-94 victory over the Timberwolves. Oklahoma City wins that series 4-1, and advances to the NBA finals.
The Pacers could join them tonight, as they play in New York. Indiana leads the Eastern Conference final 3-1.
NHL
The Panthers advanced to the Stanley Cup final with a 5-3 victory over the Hurricanes. Florida wins the Eastern Conference title 4-1.
The Oilers could advance tonight, when they visit the Stars. Edmonton leads the Western Conference final 3-1.
